I am going through such a hard time right now, professionally. With my kids and adults. It seems to me that if we all treat each other with kindness, compassion, and respect we would not have all this difficulty. I am sure I am simplifying this too much and not everything cannot be solved by this, but on the other hand it’s a great place to start.
I was responding to a first year teacher about taking time for herself and I realized that she and I are going through very similar things, even though we are at different points in our career. I believe sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself and others is take a break.
A great teacher is not defined by how many hours they put in, but rather the care they put in. I think it is of the utmost importance (and makes you a better teacher) when you take time for yourself. If you give yourself a break, it will make you better when you come back. It takes a little time off from being a teacher, friend, sister, daughter, mother to make us good at being what we are.
And that is my two cents about that. So I am allowing myself a break from here. I don’t know how long it will be, but I’m sure I’ll be back before you know it. Since I can’t vent here due to privacy issues, I need to take some time to get it straightened out in my head, heart, and soul. As soon as that happens, I will return, better then ever. Thank you for allowing me to take care of myself.
