When you think about what charities to give your valuable time and money to this holiday season, please consider the following…
They are an evangelical protestant church which uses donated money to actively oppress gay rights. They have threatened to close tens of thousands of New York soup kitchens if they are forced to adhere to civil rights laws when dealing with gay employees. They spend money lobbying governments to prevent LGBT rights legislation.
It is time well spent to research a charity before giving of your valuable time and money. More examples of discrimination below.
“I’ve seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand,” writes gay blogger and activist Bil Browning. “When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up before they’d offer assistance. We slept on the street instead and declined to break up as they demanded.”
Bil’s experience wasn’t unique: “Three years ago a community college student became homeless during the semester. The only shelter in our midwestern capitol city with any openings for women and children was a Salvation Army shelter. This lesbian household was told they had two choices: One of them could live on the street and the shelter would take the other mom and the kids as a ‘family,’ or they could all sleep on the street.”
